Great opportunities for young people taking their first career steps
Unlike other programmes, our Graduates are full-time, permanent BJSS employees, so you won’t have to reapply for a role after completing the programme.
You’ll contribute to live projects, becoming increasingly ‘hands-on’ as you develop your skills. And to help make the most of your potential, you’ll have access to tutors, personal mentors and BJSS industry experts who’ll share their experiences and help solve your day-to-day challenges. One thing’s for sure – you’ll always be learning!
So while Computer Science or Mathematics degrees are ideal for roles at BJSS, we also welcome graduates from non-technical disciplines provided they have a passion for technology. Everybody’s welcome!
Preparing you for your future in IT and business consultancy
The BJSS Academy adds to your academic qualification by introducing you to the tools and skills that will shape your career.
You’ll find a typical day on the Academy to be engaging, fun and informative. It will be filled with interactive sessions, run by our expert tutors who will make sure that you get the most out of your learning experience.
Over a four-week period, you’ll live, learn and mix with other Graduates from all BJSS locations across the UK.
In the first week, you’ll be introduced to everything BJSS.
You’ll understand how we work and how our projects begin. You’ll learn about requirements gathering and service design, and you’ll see how we form our teams and how they work together. You’ll explore the importance of professional skills, building on an introduction to Agile and our Queen’s Award for Enterprise delivery approach. You’ll end the week with a series of practical tasks. Not only will you build the environment needed for the rest of your time on the BJSS Academy, but you’ll also work through several exercises to consolidate everything that you’ve learnt.
It’s now time to add to your learning.
From Design Patterns and Abstraction to Code Structure and Toolchains, you’ll dive into fundamental engineering principles, technologies and frameworks. At the end of the week, you’ll take part in a day-long hack, where you’ll start to build the BJSS Academy project.
In week three, you’ll continue to build your knowledge in key software engineering areas.
You’ll look at both front and back-end development, test automation and the cloud, where you’ll work in teams to understand cloud platforms and hosting your code.
In the final week of the BJSS Academy, you’ll start to build on and consolidate the engineering fundamentals that you’ll have covered during the first three weeks.
You’ll work through non-functional testing, and you’ll look at programming paradigms. It’s also time to put your skills into action with an afternoon coding in Python. You’ll also set up a deployment pipeline and work through the fundamentals of the security development lifecycle. Your learning will be rounded off with a hands-on dive into the world of Big Data.
This final week will finish with a hack day and an end of course celebration to recognise your success.
Class of 2019
The BJSS Academy was an excellent way for me to start my career as a Software Developer.
This year’s Academy was held in Leeds. I live in Glasgow, so the company organised a studio apartment for me to live in. There was always someone available to do something with after work, it was easy to build connections and keep myself entertained. The Academy was a fantastic opportunity to network, meet my new colleagues from the other BJSS locations, and to form some genuine friendships.
There was a mix of abilities and backgrounds in my class, but the BJSS Academy provided a fantastic base for everyone to learn from. The first week focused on the design stage of projects including Business Analysis and requirement gathering, Architecture, team communication, and Agile processes. The other three weeks focused on development & testing and learning about the tools that facilitate them, and we closed off with a group hack and social event. It was a terrific month!
BJSS Academy Alumni
Many of our Alumni tell us how the BJSS Academy has helped them to establish enduring personal and professional relationships, positioning them for rewarding careers in IT and business consultancy. These are some of their stories:
Class of 2019
The Academy was a fantastic experience like no other! Four weeks of learning and enhancing my technical and communication skills was topped off by training an AI to recognise the emotions on my colleagues’ faces!
Class of 2018
Standout points for me at the BJSS Academy were having the opportunity to tackle activities as a group of people with different skills and backgrounds, and using my learning to create a test automation framework and suite.
Class of 2018
For me, the BJSS Academy helped me build valuable relationships and provided me with a safe place to experience my new career! Since then I’ve been a Functional Tester and I’ve transitioned to becoming a Software Engineer.
Class of 2016
Since completing the Academy, I’ve worked on different projects and now I’m the Automation Lead on NHS eRS. I learnt an incredible amount and made the most out of my time.
Class of 2017
I met so many talented people on the BJSS Academy. Since then I’ve been involved in delivering software to a global bank, and also a large government agency.
Class of 2019
It was incredible having experienced Devs, Testers and Architects tutoring us. Whether we picked up the topic quickly, or needed more help, we were supported to work at our own speed.
