BJSS and Turinglab partner to advance STEM education in the UK

7 February 2017: BJSS, the award-winning, delivery focused IT consultancy, today announces a community investment partnership with Turinglab, an organisation dedicated to teaching fundamental coding skills to school children aged between 11 and 16. The partnership will see BJSS finance 100 scholarships each year for children from low income families, initially in Leeds and Manchester. BJSS will also play a key delivery role, providing Turinglab with pro-bono software development expertise, in addition to marketing and commercial support.

Turinglab was founded by Sam Green and Henry Lake in 2015 with the aim of improving digital-skill focused STEM education in the UK. The 10-week long programme teaches computing skills in a blended-learning environment supported by local Turinglab-trained university students, and a creative project-based software tool with content designed specifically for children. The organisation has already provided over 5,000 hours of learning as the delivery partner to the outreach and diversity initiatives of Imperial College London’s Department of Computing.

In addition to BJSS’ financial and commercial investments, and to support both organisation’s desire to improve STEM and Computing education in the UK, Dr. Glynn Robinson, managing director of BJSS, will join the Turinglab advisory board. This will aid the development of the programme, ensuring that it continues to address the key skills required by the UK technology sector, and will also help Turinglab to expand across the northern UK.

Glynn Robinson, MD at BJSS, said: “Our community investment in Turinglab is a fantastic demonstration of how students, business and universities are collaborating to address the UK’s IT skills gap. We’re especially excited about helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds learn more about technology and ensuring that they are not excluded from Britain’s digital future.”

Sam Green, Founder of Turinglab, said: “BJSS is the perfect partner for us to drive and expand our programme across the UK. We created Turinglab to pass on skills we thought were crucial to the next generation in an increasingly digital world. Never has it been more critical for the UK to address the digital skills gap, and we’re delighted to be working with BJSS to help make this vision a reality.”

Professor Susan Eisenbach, Imperial College London, adds: “We are in the digital age and those without digital skills will be left behind. The evidence shows that girls and children from low-income families are disengaging early on precluding them from providing digital solutions in the future. Imperial College Department of Computing has been very pleased to support Turinglab’s Saturday programming classes for girls and low-income children. We do this because we believe that they excite children about computing and help them develop digital skills. This is a long term goal and we are pleased that organisations such as BJSS are supporting Turinglab to deliver similar programmes throughout Britain.”

BJSS recognised by the itSMF UK for DVSA Technical Support Service

28 November 2016: itSMF UK, the IT Service Management Community, has awarded BJSS and its Technical Support Service (TSS), “Service Transformation Project of the Year” for its delivery to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

The BJSS TSS offering combines a Service Desk with key ITIL processes, Agile development techniques, and a DevOps culture. The service is provided from a dedicated ISO27001-compliant facility in Leeds, and also includes application and server support in addition to running and supporting Cloud development and test environments.

Commissioned for the DVSA in September 2015, TSS provides two core functions. Firstly, to provide incident and change management for MOT testers. Secondly, BJSS manages the production environment ensuring software updates delivered by other suppliers are fit for purpose. The service handles around 100 support tickets every day and has delivered over 180 update releases.

“We’re pleased that the itSMF UK has recognised our innovative TSS offering in this way,” says Glynn Robinson, BJSS managing director. “By leading the adoption of Agile and DevOps delivery methods, championing the use of Open Source software and pioneering the use of secure public Cloud technology, BJSS has been instrumental in driving dramatic cost and efficiency improvements for the UK Government. TSS combines these elements into an innovative Transformational Service Management offering which contributes to continuous delivery, rather than acting as a simple ‘trouble ticket’ resource.”

BJSS employee named Europe’s top young software tester

21 November 2016:  Aaron Gibbon, a software testing engineer based in the BJSS Leeds Delivery Centre, has been named Graduate Tester of the Year in the 2016 European Software Testing Awards.

Aaron joined the autumn 2015 intake of the BJSS Graduate Programme after being awarded a First Class Honours degree in Computer Science and a Master of Engineering from the University of Leeds. During his graduate year, and with support from the in-house BJSS Academy training programme, Aaron played an important role in the testing of the company’s flagship NHS Spine 2 project. He also singlehandedly produced core test automation components on which the programme relies and which the NHS continues to use.

“Congratulations to Aaron Gibbon, BJSS, for winning Graduate Tester of the Year,” says Cecilia Rehn, Editor of TEST Magazine and Chair of the Judging Panel. “The judging panel was in agreement that Aaron showed clear evidence of applying best practices, collaborating with colleagues and researching and learning from them, as well as from the test community to meet and succeed the needs of his clients and projects. The commitment to share this knowledge in the community via blogs and talks, and within the company via training materials, also highlights his commitment to quality and the wider community. Overall, the Awards programme has seen a 25 per cent increase of entries in 2016, and the competition has been incredibly fierce.”

“We’re very proud of Aaron’s achievement,” continues Glynn Robinson, BJSS manging director. “When he joined the BJSS Graduate Programme, Aaron showed great potential which we realised, with support from the BJSS Academy, would add value to our NHS Spine 2 delivery. As a valued member of our award-winning testing team, we will continue to support Aaron in his journey towards his chosen specialism.”

Analysis of 14 million Tweets suggests Trump is winning the Twitter War

4 November 2016: More than seven out of every ten Tweets sent in the last four weeks by American voters are in favour of the Trump campaign, according to an independent analysis of Twitter.

The BJSS strategic design consultancy – SPARCK – analysed 14 million Tweets, in real time, to reveal a split of 74 to 26 per cent in favour of Donald Trump, contradicting opinion polls which have suggested that sentiment is roughly evenly split.

“The difference in results between opinion polls and Twitter is especially interesting to us,” says Simon Sear, Practice Leader at SPARCK. “We see two reasons for this. The election has been particularly susceptible to Twitter bots in favour of the Trump campaign. We are also picking up signals that Trump supporters, frustrated at the perception of a media bias, are using Twitter as an alternative broadcast platform.

The SPARCK team set out to see if it could quickly implement a solution to complement the data analytics market. In two weeks a re-useable solution was built to monitor and display the results of any real time event. The SPARCK data analysis tool can be set up in hours to monitor events such as live political polling, product launches, television broadcasts and sporting events.

Real-time data from this live US Election Twitter analysis can be accessed free of charge via the SPARCK website.

Notes to editors:

SPARCK is the strategic design consultancy of BJSS. Data is analysed live and displayed in real-time via the SPARCK website.

This campaign commenced at 14:00BST, 03/10/2016.

Data correct as of 10:30GMT, 04/11/2016:

Total number of Tweets: 13,911,983 Tweets

– Pro-Trump: 10,335,126
– Pro-Clinton: 3,576,857

Average number of Tweets per day: 453,732 Tweets

– Pro-Trump: 334,504 Tweets
– Pro-Clinton: 119,228 Tweets

Average across two weeks:

– Pro-Trump: 75.4%
– Pro-Clinton: 24.6%

Tweets are initially selected by popular election hashtags, for example #Election2016, #MAGA, #TrumpTrain, #TrumpPence16, #ImWithHer, #VoteHillary, #HillaryKaine etc., and then automatically analysed using a custom Data Science sentiment analysis.

Neutral Tweets (i.e. media Tweets or Tweets that show no clear candidate support) have been stripped out for the purpose of this analysis. When added, SPARCK has analysed 24,937,212 Tweets.

17 October 2016: BJSS, the award-winning delivery-focused IT consultancy, has been named as a finalist in the Service Transformation Project of the Year category of the ITSM Awards.

ITSMF UK is the country’s leading IT service management association. Its members include over 700 organisations, ranging from large multinational suppliers to independent firms, employing over 7,000 service management professionals between them.

BJSS was selected as a finalist based on its Technical Support Service (TSS) offering which provides a unique combination of a helpdesk, Agile development techniques, and a DevOps culture. BJSS Increases Bristol Investment

12 October 2016:  BJSS the award-winning delivery-focused IT consultancy announces that it is converting its existing Bristol facility into a full Digital Delivery Hub. This expansion will see BJSS inject significant investment into the City.

Tapping into the wealth of creative IT talent available in the Bristol and Bath area, local project delivery teams will provide online, mobile and IT engineering services to clients across the UK and USA, while also fulfilling services that originate from BJSS’ boutique innovation consultancy, Sparck.io.

The investment will exceed £2 million in its first year alone and is expected to include:

  • The recruitment of an additional 20 first class IT staff, mainly from the Bristol and Bath areas, including full-stack software engineers, UI & Website specialists, test engineers, mobile application developers, and UX (User Experience) consultants.
  • An expansion of the existing office facility.
  • Dedicated Engagement and Account Management leadership.

James Whitehouse, BJSS Head of Client Service, comments: “We’re delighted that Bristol will become home to our first Digital Delivery Hub. Many organisations have found that off-shoring the delivery of their business-critical IT systems has failed to deliver the rapid time to market, quality, and cost savings that are needed in today’s digital economy. By ‘nearshoring’ key programmes of work, BJSS clients benefit from increased collaboration & innovation, and access to highly skilled teams that focus on successful outcomes. Added to this, BJSS is in the unique position to offer technical design, prototyping and product innovation – an area where our Bristol-based Digital Delivery Hub will excel. Bristol is renowned for being a major hub of IT talent with a thriving Technology community. We look forward to welcoming professionals from the region to our existing team of over 500 BJSS colleagues.
