BACS Ltd is the UK's only cheque clearinghouse. BACS clears paper cheques between the high street banks, Direct Debits and other forms of Electronic payments. Over £6 Billion of mostly electronic money is cleared every day. BJSS has partnered with BancTec Ltd to develop a proof of concept system. Images and cheque data are transferred over an intranet to a central database server. The Image Archive uses an Oracle 7 database to store data and pointers in images. Images reside on a file system and are automatically archived after two days. Once images and data have been loaded into the database, the banks may then use Microsoft Internet Explorer to query the database to see any cheques cleared to or from themselves. To maintain the privacy that is required by the Data Protection Act a security system is used to ensure no bank can view cheques that they not been directly involved with.
